HiFiMAN HE6se
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The HiFiMAN HE6se (particularly the v2) is widely regarded by the Reddit community as a high-end audio 'best kept secret' that offers flagship-level detail and bass performance at a mid-range price point. While its technical capabilities—specifically its tight, limitless bass and imaging—are frequently compared to much more expensive headphones, it is notorious for being one of the most difficult headphones to drive. It requires a high-current, powerful amplifier to reach its potential, and many users find the stock headband uncomfortable, often necessitating aftermarket modifications.
Pros
- Exceptional bass quality described as full, tight, and 'limitless'
- High-end detail retrieval and imaging that punches well above its typical sale price
- Outstanding price-to-performance ratio, often cited as an 'endgame' option for those on a budget
- Resolving sound signature that scales significantly with better amplification
Cons
- Extremely low sensitivity makes them nearly impossible to drive with standard headphone jacks or dongles
- Stock headband is frequently criticized for being uncomfortable or poorly designed
- Heavy build can lead to fatigue during long listening sessions
- Mixed opinions on the v2 sound signature, with some describing it as 'warmer and slower' than the original HE6
Caveats
- Requires a high-gain amplifier capable of handling very inefficient planars; 10–20 dB of gain is often cited as a minimum
- Comfort is a common pain point, leading many owners to recommend immediate headband or earpad swaps
- Tube amplifiers may cause 'worbly' or warped vocals according to some user experiences
Best for
- Critical listeners who already own or are willing to invest in a powerful speaker amp or high-current headphone amp
- Audiophiles looking for flagship-level detail and bass under $1,000
- Users comfortable with modding their gear for better comfort
Avoid if
- You intend to use your headphones with a phone, laptop, or low-power portable DAC/AMP
- You are sensitive to headband pressure or heavy headphones
- You want a 'plug and play' experience without worrying about power requirements

I'm actually using my HE6se's right now because of your post and just find them to them to worbly off my tubes; had the same issue back when I had an Arya off the same tube amps. If it was just the bass, that would be fun, but the vocals getting warped I can't handle.
HE6se is a better headphone than both imho if you want a Hifiman.
The HE6se V2 are great for the price but there are 2 things to note: they require a lot of power to drive and they are not that comfortable (imo).
HE6SE is the best kept secret to reach the high end on a midfi budget ;) Best headphone under 1k and it costs $350~ brand spanking new.
The Q5K, e.g., can drive the Hifiman HE6SE (which is even less efficient) loud enough, and it plays them decent enough to achieve mid tier levels of quality. Yet, that's imo not worth the squeeze for such a headphone.
Now, I totally would love to see profiles for the following: - Arya Unveiled - Arya Organic - Hifiman HE6SE
I was wondering if it shares some similarity in this regard with the HE6SE that keeps improving.
even the single most demanding planar headphones available, the hifiman he6... they need more than the typical 50-100mw to be functional.
Thse HIFIMAN HE6se v2 are another level (personal opinion off course), Bass are the best i've ever listened, full but tight, imaging is fantastic, Arya have a better soundstage and they are fantastic in a way but HIFIMAN HE6se v2 detail is just better.
I paid them new 300 and I'm just soooo happy about them
