HiFiMAN Edition XV
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The HiFiMAN Edition XV is generally regarded as a warm, musical successor to the Edition XS, offering a punchier low-end and improved build quality. While it is praised for its comfort and non-fatiguing treble, it is a polarizing product regarding soundstage and physical cup depth. Some users find the soundstage natural and neutral, while others describe it as 'collapsed' or flat compared to other planar magnetic headphones in its class.
Pros
- Improved build quality over previous entry-level HiFiMAN models.
- High comfort levels with soft pads and a suspension strap design suitable for glasses wearers.
- Punchy bass with excellent sub-bass extension.
- Warm, subdued treble that is ideal for listeners sensitive to high-frequency fatigue.
Cons
- Shallow ear cups can cause ears to press against the internal metal mesh, leading to irritation.
- Polarizing soundstage depth, with some users reporting a 'collapsed' or flat presentation.
- Potential for driver issues, such as a constant hum or buzz in some units.
- May sound 'muddy' or overly warm for competitive gaming compared to brighter alternatives.
Caveats
- Opinions on soundstage are highly inconsistent; it is described as both 'neutral' and 'collapsed' by different users.
- The internal cup material was changed from cloth to metal mesh, which is a significant comfort regression for some.
- Some users find the sound signature nearly identical to the cheaper Edition XS.
Best for
- Treble-sensitive listeners looking for a warm, musical signature.
- Audiophile beginners seeking a comfortable at-home listening setup.
- Users who wear glasses and need a low-clamp suspension headband.
Avoid if
- You have large or protruding ears that may touch shallow cup internals.
- You prioritize a wide, expansive soundstage for gaming or orchestral music.
- You prefer a bright, analytical sound signature.

I tried to like the XV but it just seemed like a worse version of the XS. The headband is nice but the cups are more shallow. They also replaced the cloth with a metal mesh and it was touching my ears and vibrating... I hated it.
I've used the edition xs and the amazing Arya organics and man did I hate the XV. Especially how shallow the cups are, how identical the sound is to the xs, and that they use metal mesh and not cloth for your ears. Awful.
I grabbed the edition xv on a whim thinking they would sound better but they sound IDENTICAL as hell to my ears. And they are more shallow in the cups so my ears touch the thin metal mesh and it's irritating as hell.
Hifiman Edition XV is a good option as it checks all of your boxes.
The low end is slightly punchier on the XV.
Build quality XV easily wins.
Soundprofile is better for me personally on XV. It sounds fairly neutral, good midrange but no unnatural exaggeration of the soundstage like the Arya Stealth.
I would say Edition XV is quite safe. Arya organic is controversial. Many people find it noticeably brighter than Arya stealth, that already was quite bright.
the HiFiMan Sundara or Edition XV might be good choices since you can reasonably expect them to sound close to how they graph, which means they should be easier to EQ to an averaged target for music production.
But you can return it and get edition xv instead which is actually the succesor to the XS and more neutral-neutral according to reviews.
