Heidelberg

For Germany, any of the old university cities like Marburg, Tübingen or Heidelberg will be a good pick. Hamburg and Berlin are quite enjoyable and diverse, but they are both a bit isolated from other destinations. Berlin more so than Hamburg.

Germany I stayed in NRW. Cologne has a beautiful cathedral and the station is central location to Koblenz, Heidelberg, Baden Baden, a bunch of small cities and my favourite: cochem and the moselle river

Historic German cities which weren't bombed include Bamberg, Heidelberg and Rothenburg ob Der Tauber.

Really the plan after I booked was Heidelberg, Munich, and another stop.

I loved Heidelberg when I went there.

Flew into Munich and stayed 2 days for Oktoberfest, then went to Innsbrook (stayed overnight), then to Salzburg for 1/2 day, then up to Ansbach (had friends in military to visit) and visited Rothenberg (cool city), and then Heidelberg, then flew home from Frankfurt.

If you meant frankfurt-am-main, then you could visit the city Heidelberg, which is only a 1,5 hour ride from there. It's a really nice little town for a one-day visit with one of the oldest universities in Europe and very old castle ruins on top of the city. Truly a place worth visiting, especially if you are into history
