Pros
- I'm only partway through Heavenly Tyrant, but I think it's addressed a lot of the fun-but-shallow feeling I had about Iron Widow, and much improved Iron Widow in retrospect.
- This is still very much a "female rage" feminist sci-fi, with Zetian finally getting some female allies at her side while not being 100% correct all the time. But between the aftermath of a very violent communist revolution that mirrors...
- Iron Widow and its sequel, Heavenly Tyrant, by Xiran Jay Zhao
- I liked this a lot more than book 1, and it sets up for a book 3 which I didn't expect
- I was very actively aware while reading HT that there was very much less coming-of-age and other YA tropes present and I was very grateful for it. ... Which I thought was super awesome storytelling. ... And I absolutely adored Zeitian's...
Cons
- Anyway, as far as the actual book itself goes, it wasn't really for me, but I respect it a bit more than book 1. It was doing a bit of a Communist Revolution sort of plot line, with showing some of the brutality that came along with thin...
- Parent context: Yeah I had a lot of problems with book 2 after loving book 1. Reply: I think that's my biggest issue which I didn't mention because that's the most subjective criticism I can give, but overrall I felt bored by the book. I...

- Yeah I had a lot of problems with book 2 after loving book 1. - The events of the book required more internal depth to xetian - The basically cultural revolution apologist themes rub me wrong - it’s not nearly as fun - I wasn’t surpris...
- My issue is that the communist ideas are shallow, like everything else in the book. ... I don't intend on reading the third one either.

Anyway, as far as the actual book itself goes, it wasn't really for me, but I respect it a bit more than book 1. It was doing a bit of a Communist Revolution sort of plot line, with showing some of the brutality that came along with things as well as showing why people believed in it.
Parent context: Yeah I had a lot of problems with book 2 after loving book 1. Reply: I think that's my biggest issue which I didn't mention because that's the most subjective criticism I can give, but overrall I felt bored by the book. I could probably ignore everything else if it was fun but generally it was just... meh.
overrall I felt bored by the book.
Parent context: Yeah I had a lot of problems with book 2 after loving book 1. Reply: it’s not nearly as fun - I wasn’t surprised by the gods, they were exactly what I expected but that doesn’t make them interesting

My issue is that the communist ideas are shallow, like everything else in the book. ... I don't intend on reading the third one either.
This book lost me at the Marxist themed safe words. After that, I couldn’t take anything seriously. I doubt I’m reading the third, if it’s ever published.
The sequel, however, I did not enjoy very much. ... flaws that were minor in the first book now become egregious, affecting the pacing, development and overall enjoyment of the story. ... None of the political structures are well defined, explained or even properly known by Zetian ... the work feeling unbalanced and ultimately not worth reading, in my opinion.
The sequel, however, I did not enjoy very much. ... flaws that were minor in the first book now become egregious, affecting the pacing, development and overall enjoyment of the story. ... abandoning much of the original cast and shifting the focus so drastically has left the work feeling unbalanced and ultimately not worth reading, in my opinion.
I'm only partway through Heavenly Tyrant, but I think it's addressed a lot of the fun-but-shallow feeling I had about Iron Widow, and much improved Iron Widow in retrospect.
