Pros

  • Both are beautiful (I especially loved Hangzhou) and might take you away from the feeling of being in a more international city vs. Shanghai if the logistics for Shanghai in general make much more sense.
  • I spent 4 nights / 3 full days in Hangzhou and I loved my time there. So much to see around and I really enjoyed cycling around. The tea museum and the Dragon well tea growing areas are very much recommended, so is the Grand Canal museum.
  • Since the 30-day visa-free policy kicked in, this place is basically a cheat code for life.
  • You could include Suzhou and Hangzhou in your Shanghai trip as both cities are within daytrip distance
  • I would include Suzhou and Hangzhou instead of Yangshou as both can be done as daytrips from Shanghai.

Cons

  • Hangzhou is nice but not 3 day nice, and certainly not 'skip Beijing nice'.
  • You don’t need to spend that much time in Hangzhou, especially since it’s extremely hot in August and it’s not the season for the Qiantang River tidal bore.
