Skip Hallstatt. Literally the worst example of overtourism in Europe.
Hallstatt is really unpopular on this sub, but I personally liked it. It's a quick trip from Salzburg so it doesn't take much time to see it. My visit was only half a day - got on a tour bus from Salzburg in the morning and had about two hours in Hallstatt before returning to Salzburg by around 1pm.
You spend a fews days in Salzburg to enjoy that amazing city, then take a short day trip to Hallstatt and enjoy all the amazing views along the way. That’s how you travel to Hallstatt.

I decided to do a version of option 1. I didn't visit Untersberg, but rather Zwölferhorn. And yes, that plan turned out to be real good.
We did Christmas in Bavaria one year and it was great! Munich & Nuremberg, then into Austria for Salzburg, and Hallstatt. One of our best trips!
Personally, I think Hallstatt is very skippable. Granted, I did travel there during winter + the town was closed for filming (yes, the entire town). But that aside, there's just not much to do. Its very small, very few shops/eaterys.
Is it just me or is traveling to Hallstatt such a pain when one isn't driving? It has just taken us so so long to reach Hallstatt from Munich Hbf!
My wife and I did a honeymoon photo shoot in Hallstatt. I've been wanting to return because we didn't really have time to explore.
