AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Ha Long Bay is widely regarded as a bucket-list destination in Vietnam, famous for its dramatic limestone karsts and emerald waters. While it is frequently described as touristy, most travelers agree the scenery is "super worth it," particularly when experienced via an overnight cruise rather than a rushed day trip.

Pros

  • Stunning and iconic limestone mountain scenery
  • Variety of cruise lengths available, from day trips to multi-night stays
  • Unique opportunities to visit floating villages
  • Relaxing overnight boat experiences that allow for a more comfortable pace

Cons

  • Can feel overly touristy and crowded
  • Significant travel time required to reach the bay from Hanoi

Caveats

  • Overnight cruises (1-2 nights) are highly recommended over day trips to avoid a rushed experience
  • Opinions are occasionally mixed, with some travelers suggesting Ninh Binh as a comparable or preferable alternative
  • Local travel agencies may offer cheaper multi-night bookings than those found online in advance

Best for

  • Travelers visiting Hanoi with at least two days to spare
  • Fans of scenic boat tours and landscape photography
  • Those looking for a relaxed, all-inclusive overnight experience

Avoid if

  • You have a very limited timeframe in Northern Vietnam
  • You have a strong aversion to highly commercialized tourist hubs

Trips from Hanoi: Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay, although if you only have a few days I would just pick one. Ha Long Bay I would recommend overnight cruise so that would eat up a lot of time if you don't have much.

Ha Long Bay seems to get very mixed reactions in this sub. Personally I really enjoyed it. That being said it's totally fine to skip out on it if you're going to Ninh Binh in my opinion.
