Guards! Guards!

It was actually an appearance of a dragon in Discworld (Guards! Guards!) that got them into Pratchett.

Guards! Guards! has some strong classic fantasy riffing, the main characters aren't especially progressive people with the way they think about other people/groups, and yet the underlying themes are very very relevant today

A bit tongue-in-cheek, but may I suggest 'Guards! Guards!' by Terry Pratchett?

The city watch books, starting with Guards! Guards! charts a group of middle aged Watchmen who see the city watch develop from a washed up skeleton crew to a modernised, ethically diverse police force - and has a wonderful relationship as it's core between one of the main characters and an equal-of-age, strong woman.

Terry Pratchett's Discworld series is perfect for this - start with "Mort" or "Guards! Guards!" if you want that same absurdist humor but with fantasy thrown in.
