Griswold is a highly coveted vintage cast iron brand, frequently cited as the gold standard for its smooth, mirror-like cooking surfaces and significantly lighter weight compared to modern cast iron. While the brand is no longer in production, its pans are prized by enthusiasts for their superior casting quality and longevity, often outperforming contemporary brands in non-stick performance once properly seasoned.
Pros
- Significantly lighter weight than modern cast iron pans like Lodge
- Smooth, mirror-finish cooking surface that provides excellent non-stick properties
- Exceptional casting quality that many users consider superior to anything produced today
- Extreme longevity, with many 80-100 year old pans still in daily use
Cons
- High market prices on platforms like eBay, often ranging from $100 to $200
- Vintage pieces are prone to warping, leading to 'wobble' or 'spinning' on flat surfaces
- Often requires restoration (stripping and re-seasoning) when found at thrift stores or flea markets
Caveats
- Condition varies significantly; finding pieces that sit perfectly flat can be difficult
- Some Griswold pans are 'unmarked' but can be identified by specific catalog numbers
- Restoration can be labor-intensive, sometimes requiring multiple rounds of stripping to remove old carbon buildup
Best for
- Cast iron enthusiasts seeking a lightweight alternative to modern pans
- Cooks who prefer a smooth, machined cooking surface for eggs and delicate foods
- Collectors of vintage kitchenware
Avoid if
- You are on a tight budget and unwilling to hunt for deals at flea markets
- You require a guaranteed flat bottom for a glass-top or induction stove
- You prefer a brand-new, pre-seasoned pan that is ready to use out of the box

I have a collection of Griswolds ranging from a slant logo to the most modern SBL (1957). None of them came up positive for lead, which greatly relieved me.
I had a pretty decent cast iron selection and have found some pieces. Griswolds, lodges, older pieces etc. what would people recommend for a restoration.
The rust looks superficial, great find.
I turned it over, thinking, "Surely this isn't anything..." and nearly peed my pants, not because it's particularly old or rare (at least to my knowledge), but because it was FIVE DOLLARS & FIFTY CENTS.
I was it's keeper for more than 20 years. It was the first pan I owned and restored. Before we put the tile down, family was like *You cook with a lot of cast iron. What you drop a pan?!?!* Well there is your answer. Tile 1 Griswold 0
And with those wide pour spouts and size on the handle…. I’m sorta thinking Griswold. Also not sure how versed you are with cast iron, but this is an everything pan, not just corn bread. But again, please get a small lye bath going for this pan. It’s worth it not only sentimentally but if it’s a large block logo Griswold it would be worth it even from a financial standpoint
Parent context: fun fact: all of these pans are considered “lead-free” by the EPA, which has a upper threshold of 0.25% lead content to be considered lead-free. Reply: For cooking instruments like cast iron, there is no safe level of lead exposure. ... these cast iron pans have 23,000 times more lead than what is permitted.
This resulted in me discovering that all of my vintage Griswold pans had some degree of lead contamination and that none of my modern day cast iron pans (Lodge, Smithey, Yeti, Le Creuset) did.
Griswold cast iron is regularly touted as the best and lightest cast iron money can buy with no moderns pans holding a torch to it. They are GREAT pans and also very beautiful collector’s items which have a practical use!
Did she buy it?! That’s cool as hell
