Apple applies copious amounts of digital signal processing (DSP) to their IEMs/headhpones. While I don’t love them for music, they sound fantastic for movies. The reason Apple can do this is because they precisely tune the DSP for each product‘s components, all of which they control. All that goes out the window with a standalone DAC & user-supplied IEMs/headphones (and Apple hates EQ, so…)
Unless you use something from mainstream brands (Apple/Sony/Bose/etc) no one would even know what you have.
I'd say Apple and Bose look to be made the best, of the stuff I tried so far.
Apple not only isn’t very interested in this to begin with, they don’t even let you use EQ on your iPhone so there’s no shot they’d ever create a sort of on device eq for something like this which would defeat a lot of its purpose.
