God of War (2018)

God of War (2018) is widely celebrated for its narrative depth and visual fidelity, though its gameplay mechanics receive more scrutiny from the community. While the story of Kratos and Atreus is considered a high point for the medium, opinions on the combat and 'open-world' structure are divided, with some finding the transition from the original series' hack-and-slash style to be clunky or restrictive.
Pros
- Exceptional narrative and character development, particularly the father-son relationship
- Stunning visuals, animations, and high-quality voice acting
- Deep adoration and respectful adaptation of Norse mythology
- Rewarding 'super bosses' (Valkyries) that provide a significant endgame challenge
- Aggressive playstyle is rewarded in combat for those who master the mechanics
Cons
- Lack of enemy variety leads to repetitive combat encounters
- Traversal can feel slow and tedious, involving frequent boat trips and walking
- RPG and gear systems are often viewed as needlessly complex or burdensome
- Tight camera placement can feel restrictive and reduce the sense of scale compared to older titles
- Combat movesets can feel limited due to a reliance on ability cooldowns
Caveats
- The 'open world' is largely a series of linear corridors rather than a truly free-roaming environment
- Difficulty is inconsistent, with the main story being relatively easy while optional content features sharp spikes
- Fans of the original trilogy's gameplay may find the slower, more deliberate pace jarring
Best for
- Players prioritizing cinematic storytelling and character growth
- Fans of Norse mythology and high-fidelity art direction
- Those looking for a polished, single-player action-adventure experience
Avoid if
- You prefer the fast-paced, wide-angle hack-and-slash style of the original series
- You dislike mandatory slow-paced traversal segments used for dialogue
- You are looking for a true open-world game with high enemy diversity

Every positive thing you've said is why I think the reboot games can't even hold a candle to the OGs. They just don't have that epic scale.
God of War 2018 absolutely nails that particular draw of what makes great fiction, regardless of the medium. ... I'm really struck by just how well they've nailed the whole "going on an adventure" vibe.
for me, the story and set pieces are definitely enough to kind of suffer through the more boring and gratuitous combat encounters. I would say even some of the side content is worth doing.
I think that 2018 is way better in story and narrative and characters; but yes gameplay wise Ragnarok is a clear improvement
I played the newer God of War on PS4 a couple years ago and loved the story
Echoes of the End is the debut game from Myrkur Games and it's a very obvious God of War 2018 clone. ... It doesn't do anything nearly as well as God of War with its gameplay or story
The combat is super floaty and like Im wading through pudding. But what I REALLY hated was how aggressive the magnetic "distance correcting" is for attacks. ... It also has that awful AAA problem where if you take 5 seconds to think of a puzzle, it tells you the answer. It also has a lot of openwoirld bloat that's common nowadays.
The core gameplay is great, the one track shot is very cool, the story is decent, graphics very impressive even now. But the number of upgrade options and various different XPs, and currencies, and points just felt ridiculous. They put too much game in there, to the point where it would have been better had they taken things out.
Tested in God of War (2018) running at 60 fps stable.
lowkey God of War 2018 and Ragnarok fit this. why are my basic moves from GOW3 based on a timer now and why do they have damage value upgrade in a skill tree?
