Geneva
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Geneva is frequently viewed as a convenient transit hub or a secondary destination rather than a primary tourist highlight. While some visitors appreciate its lakeside scenery and proximity to the mountains, others find it less compelling compared to other Swiss or French cities, often citing high daily costs and a perceived lack of excitement.
Pros
- Scenic lake views and nearby castles
- Excellent gateway for skiing trips to Chamonix and Zermatt
- Convenient flight connections for budget-conscious travelers using it as a stopover
- Proximity to regional attractions like Gruyères
Cons
- High cost of living and expensive daily expenses
- Perceived as less interesting than other Swiss or French destinations
- Potential for strict administrative or security encounters
Caveats
- Travelers often recommend minimizing time in the city itself to maximize time in the surrounding mountains or more 'interesting' regions.
Best for
- Transit to ski resorts
- Short stopovers between France and Switzerland
- Lakeside sightseeing
Avoid if
- You are on a tight budget
- You have limited time and want a high-density 'must-see' tourist experience

I really wouldn't bother with that. It is OK, but if you have waited years to finally see France then spending a chunk of that time in one of the less interesting places in Switzerland doesn't make much sense.
So far I've managed: Geneva
I'd suggest if you're in the SE part of France you hop over to say Geneva...check out the big lake there, maybe Gruyere (if you're into the Aliens franchise), visit the mountains, etc. You want to minimise the amount of time travelling and maximise the amount of time sightseeing.
Our plan was originally to go Budapest to Paris; however, due to cheap flights we picked Geneva. I think we’ll stay in Geneva and head to Paris the next day. Thanks !
Flight to Geneva
I really liked Geneva one of my favorite castles is on the east side of lake.
Geneva is amazing, Zurich is as well. Italy is a beautiful country as well.
Oslo,Cardiff and Geneva? They would be a long way down the list..though I've actually been to all of them as a tourist, and there's something interesting in all of them too,so..
I have basically only ever spent 3ish days in Geneva, but the day to day costs were rough.
Next winter (skiing focus): Geneva → Chamonix (maybe) → Zermatt → Glacier Express → St. Moritz → Zurich
