Pros

  • If you want a watch for running or sports in general, the Forerunner 165 is more than sufficient and super light as well, can't recommend it enough, especially because it's only around $200.
  • The Forerunner 165 really does seem like the sweet spot for someone just getting into Garmin - AMOLED screen at that price point is pretty wild compared to what we had even a couple years ago
  • the Garmin Forerunner® 165 is your best value, entry-level watch. It has a ton of features and an AMOLED screen, as well as solid single-band GPS and more data and analytics than you'll know what to do with. It does hiking, swimming, and...
  • for a runner coming from the vivoactive 3, the garmin forerunner 165 is a really solid upgrade. it keeps things simple, has accurate gps, a much better screen, and long battery life without adding extra features that might feel overwhelm...
  • The Forerunner 55 ($150) and 165 ($200) are great entry level running watches.

Cons

  • 165 doesn't have multiband GPS.
  • It's basically all current-gen devices except some lower-end models like the Forerunner 55 and 165
  • Vivoactive and Forerunner (that's what Garmin told me) doesn't have pace alert while swimming.
  • Sleep tracking I find can be a little off but generally quite good (I’ve gotten up out of bed, poured myself some water and gotten back into bed and it’s told me I was in REM, lol), but I think that’s the same with most fitness watches....
  • I kept the screen off because Amoled annoys me like hell. I kept the FR165 for when I go running or on a biking vacation, but on day to day I'm with mechanical watches now and the Helio strap.

And if all you need is data recording for hikes, geez, the 165 or even the 55 does it all already.
