For myself, I knew long before I finished Gardens of the Moon that it wasn't for me.
When i read Gardens of The Moon, every sentence, every descriptive was an adventure. How the characters react when Anamandor Rake enters the picture, or how his floating realm casts shadow over frightened wizards. And even though many said GoTM is a hard book to get though, I found every page of it beautiful.
Gardens of the moon and Second Apocalypse are examples of these books that I had this feeling with, and I plan to continue that series.
i've only read GoTM from malazan, but damn this book was confusing. towards the end i got a better understanding and the front half of the book made more sense. i did really struggle with a want to continue and absorb the info.
My main issue the couple times I've tried and dropped the book wasn't really being confused or not following what was happening, but rather being given little reason to care about what was happening. Nothing hooked me, no character drew me in, no story to keep me turning the pages. Just a bunch of shit happening.
