Pros

  • I truly love Rebirth and the world they created for it, minigames and all. I always felt that the hate is massively overblown. I loved every minute of my playthrough and have enjoyed every subsequent one.
  • I clocked in at 106 hours and enjoyed every minute of it. I also know that there's an argument in the Final Fantasy fandom between people who prefer turn based and real time and while I love turn based games, I wouldn't complain if this...
  • I couldn't get enough of Rebirth because it really brought back the original's nostalgia, and it was a relief to finally get out of Midgar and go to more interesting locales.
  • I enjoyed the open world, too. Yes, it's checklisty. Yes, Chadley can be annoying. But it's a checklist done right. I actually really enjoyed navigating each of the areas - especially Gongaga - and each area didn't have too much content...
  • Any excuse to engage with Rebirth's combat is good in my book. It's not going to sweep you off your feet like Breath of the Wild or Red Dead Redemption 2, but as far as checklists go it's a damn good one.

Cons

  • I just don’t like the hybrid mode. The modern philosophy for Square Enix is to go for maximum mass appeal, and they were trying to appease both camps with this hybrid combat, the turn based lovers and the action combat lovers. I just thi...
  • The open world is just outright completely rubbish to me. What exactly do you mean with "checklist done right" here? I found the areas annoying to navigate and the content really poor.
  • The ending kind of frustrated me in the sense that they teased "it can be different this time guys" but still went through with killing aeris the same way (and all the zach stuff seemed kind of pointless too).
  • Each section from Costa del Sol onwards wore me down a bit more. The “open world” was just repetitive zones with different skins and Chocobo mechanics used to gate better materia and upgrades, so you don’t have to do it but sort of do ha...
  • With all the filler and unnecessary bloat, the changes to the story especially the addition of multiverse/alternate realities nearly killed this game for me.

I just don’t like the hybrid mode. The modern philosophy for Square Enix is to go for maximum mass appeal, and they were trying to appease both camps with this hybrid combat, the turn based lovers and the action combat lovers. I just think the result isn’t that interesting. I would rather play a game with either full turn based combat or full action combat.

I clocked in at 106 hours and enjoyed every minute of it. I also know that there's an argument in the Final Fantasy fandom between people who prefer turn based and real time and while I love turn based games, I wouldn't complain if this game's combat was the blueprint going forward.

I enjoyed the open world, too. Yes, it's checklisty. Yes, Chadley can be annoying. But it's a checklist done right. I actually really enjoyed navigating each of the areas - especially Gongaga - and each area didn't have too much content so you could clear them reasonably quickly. Any excuse to engage with Rebirth's combat is good in my book.

I loved the mini-games and how they broke the pacing up... except for 3D Brawlers. Fuck you Sephiroth. The Cosmo Canyon proto relic mini-game was a bit of a miss for me as well. I liked the idea of having Final Fantasy XII's Gambit system return, but the mini-game was just too complicated on a meta level

I clocked in at ~130 hours after rolling the credits, and it throws a ton at you in those hours. There's lots to do in its open world: side quests, mini-games, combat challenges both in the open world and via Chadley, etc. It's an exercise in pure excess that harkens back to Final Fantasy's SNES and PS1 roots and very much in spirit of the original Final Fantasy VII.
