Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The FiiO JT1 is widely regarded as a high-value, budget-friendly closed-back headphone that punches above its weight class in terms of price-to-performance. It is characterized by a bass-heavy sound signature that appeals to casual listeners and gamers, though it faces criticism for a lack of refinement compared to more expensive models like the FiiO FT1.

Pros

  • Excellent value for the money, often competing with headphones twice its price
  • Strong bass performance that is well-suited for bass-heavy genres and immersive gaming
  • Lightweight and generally comfortable for long sessions
  • Includes a microphone cable, making it a viable out-of-the-box headset for gaming
  • Responds well to EQ and earpad swaps to refine the sound

Cons

  • Stock tuning can be perceived as muddy, with bass bleeding into the mid-range
  • Build quality concerns regarding the thin cables, which some users find fragile
  • Earpads are reported to be somewhat shallow, which may affect comfort for some users
  • Bass can feel 'artificial' or less controlled compared to higher-end offerings

Caveats

  • Opinions on cable durability are mixed; while some find them flimsy, others report they hold up fine under normal use.
  • The soundstage for gaming is polarizing, with some finding it great for competitive play and others feeling the audio sounds 'distant.'
  • Stock tuning is frequently described as needing EQ to reach its full potential.

Best for

  • Budget-conscious buyers looking for a 'fun' sound signature
  • Gamers who need a wired headset with an included microphone
  • Users who enjoy heavy sub-bass rumble

Avoid if

  • You require a neutral or analytical sound signature for critical listening
  • You are sensitive to 'muddy' or bloated mid-bass
  • You prefer premium, heavy-duty build materials

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median age of approximately 407 days, which may affect relevance for this fast-changing hardware category.

For closed headphones in the $100 price range, I find these two, together with the Fiio JT1, to be above average.

Feel free to check out the Fiio JT1 as well - cheaper and great value for the money but not as good as the JT1.

I have both, and to my ears, the JT1 indeed have more bass quantity. But the implementation compared to the FT1 is less refined, less controlled, and some people would call it muddy and intruding into the mids.
