Pros
- I hear good things about Field but haven’t had the opportunity to try one.
- That Field was almost half price during Prime week, get one next Prime Week.
- Rather get a smithey, yeti (butterpat), or field if I’m gonna shell big bucks on a fancy pan
- I can strip and sand my pans myself, but I couldn't get the kind of perfect finish you see on a Field
- The Fields were to have thinner walls so they weighed less. (I have one of their original Kickstarter pans, no idea what their current lineup looks like.)
Cons
- The amount of companies that have come out in the past few years (Smithey, Stargazer, Field, etc.) that sell pans only marginally better than Lodge while charging 5x the price is baffling.
- I can't remember if it was Smithy or Field who smoothed their cast iron and had problems until the started sand blasting them to create texture for he seasoning to adhere to.
- That's how I felt and I got a Field. I like it a lot but it depends how you plan to use it. As a do everything pan that happens to be made of cast iron, great. As a pan meant for exclusively cast iron work (stuff that requires maintainin...

They are both great! ... The Field is a lot lighter, and it is my go-to pan for smaller meals.

Parent context: Yeah I’m more in the do everything pan category. I like the weight of the Smithey but have ready too many bad reviews on it. Do you feel like the field is a really well built, high quality pan that will last generations as advertised? And can it take a beating like it’s nothing like the lodge can? Think I’m leaning towards the Field right now for sure Reply: Your line of thinking sounds very similar to mine and I think it would be worth it for you. I really love mine and it brings me joy to see on my stove top.
That's how I felt and I got a Field. I like it a lot but it depends how you plan to use it. As a do everything pan that happens to be made of cast iron, great. As a pan meant for exclusively cast iron work (stuff that requires maintaining temperature), it just can't compete with my heavier Lidge.
