Farpoint 40

The Farpoint 40 is a staple in the one-bag travel community, highly regarded for its technical suspension system and load-bearing hip belt that make carrying heavy loads comfortable over long distances. It is frequently praised for its carry-on compatibility and the ability to stow straps for overhead bins or checking. However, opinions are mixed regarding its internal layout; while some appreciate the raw packing space, others criticize the lack of built-in organization and the absence of a dedicated water bottle holder.
Pros
- Excellent weight distribution via a rigid frame and proper load-bearing hip belt.
- Stowable harness system allows the bag to be converted into a 'loaf' for easier storage in overhead bins.
- Adjustable torso length accommodates various body types, including those with long torsos.
- Effective compression system helps manage bulk and keep the bag tight for airport scales.
- Newer models (post-2023) have moved the laptop sleeve to the back for better weight distribution and protection.
Cons
- Minimal internal organization and few pockets compared to competitors.
- Lack of an integrated water bottle holder is a common point of frustration.
- Relatively heavy for its size, weighing approximately 3.5 lbs.
- Older versions placed the laptop sleeve in the front, which could affect balance and protection.
Caveats
- The Fairview 40 is the women-specific version of this bag, though some female users still prefer the Farpoint.
- Older models may not be PFAS-free and lack the updated laptop compartment placement.
- While comfortable for many, some users find the straps uncomfortable or the bag less convenient to pack than multi-bag setups.
Best for
- One-bag travelers who prioritize carry-on compatibility.
- Users who expect to walk long distances or trek with their luggage.
- Travelers who use packing cubes to manage organization.
Avoid if
- You require extensive built-in pockets and organization.
- An integrated water bottle pocket is a non-negotiable feature.
- You are looking for the absolute lightest weight bag in the 40L category.
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 431 days, which may not fully reflect the most recent minor design iterations.

I don't use the 26+6, I have the Farpoint 40 and the PD cubes are, imo, top tier.
BUT, i think the farpoint 40 is a pretty fantastic bag. its a bit more technical and “serious” than the cotipaxi imo.
I have the Farpoint 40. I’m 6’1”. It’s unbelievably comfortable, makes weight just disappear. I have a looong torso (my inseam is 30” 😅) and it fits great.
That said, I do wish the Farpoint had a water bottle holder. Probably my only quibble.
For only 3 weeks, I definitely think it’s worth sizing down, whether that’s the Farpoint 40 (on sale rn for $140) or another bag.
The Farpoint 40, ULA Camino and REI Trail 40 are carry on compatible in most cases.
I got the Farpoint 40 (which i bought around 2018/2019) and the Matador GlobeRider 35 and I already know they are both not the best option for such long distances to wear but I dont want to buy a new one for just this one trip.
What about the Farpoint 40? That one has the frame/hipbelt/load lifters that you like on the Tortuga.
Farpoint 40 I have actually qualifies, I just have to keep in mind not overpacking it. It also has "proper" load bearing hip belt, rigid frame and adjustable strap height.
With the Farpoint 40, there's a compartment in which you can tuck all your straps in and turn it into kinda like a "loaf", so you can check it in or throw it in the overhead bin without all the crazy straps sticking out. It's big, but no one has ever asked me to put it on the scale at the airport coz it looks tight. 120% satisfied with this purchase.
