Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Exped Megamat is widely regarded by the Reddit camping community as the gold standard for car camping comfort, frequently described as the 'Rolls Royce' of sleeping mats. It is celebrated for providing a sleep experience comparable to a traditional home mattress, making it a favorite for side sleepers and those camping in extreme cold.

Pros

  • Exceptional comfort and support, even for side sleepers and larger individuals
  • High insulation (R-value of 8.1) suitable for sleeping directly on frozen ground
  • Available in various sizes, including single and queen-width options
  • Highly durable and repairable with standard adhesive kits

Cons

  • Expensive compared to most other camping pads
  • Extremely bulky and heavy, limited strictly to car camping
  • Takes up significant storage space in vehicles and at home even when deflated

Caveats

  • While overwhelmingly praised, a minority of users find simpler foam mattresses more comfortable
  • The bulk can be difficult to justify for families as children grow and require more gear space
  • Often suggested to be inflated to only 75% capacity for optimal comfort

Best for

  • Car campers who prioritize sleep quality over portability
  • Side sleepers
  • Winter camping or sleeping on very cold surfaces

Avoid if

  • You are backpacking or need to carry your gear long distances
  • You have very limited cargo space in your vehicle
  • You are on a strict budget and can tolerate a standard foam pad

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 409 days, which is generally acceptable for a stable hardware product like a sleeping mat.

Have a look at the Exped Megamat or Dura series. They are generally highly rated for comfort and are quite thick.

Of course you have the Exped Megamat and Neoloft from Therm a rest that are more comfortable, but these are a good trade off.

I was originally going to opt for a double Exped Megamat (since I hear that's the best) or a similar high-quality foam-and-air mat

I was finally able to find someone at Scheels willing to help me and inflate a Megamat. And did a side by side comparison with a Hest mat. After laying on it for 10 minutes straight on each one. Exped, OMG this mat is super comfy and firm. Bought it without hesitation.
