El Salvador is increasingly recognized by travelers as a safe, modernizing, and underrated destination in Central America. Following a significant crackdown on gangs, the country has shed much of its dangerous reputation, with visitors highlighting its friendly locals, volcanic beaches, and the convenience of a dollarized economy. While it offers diverse activities like surfing and volcano hiking in a compact area, opinions on its affordability are mixed compared to other Latin American regions.
Pros

- Diverse geography allows for surfing and volcano hiking on the same day.
- Uses the US Dollar, simplifying transactions for many international travelers.
- Generally perceived as cleaner and more modern than its northern neighbors.
- Friendly and welcoming local population.
Cons
- Driving and parking in cities is often described as annoying or difficult.
- Significant language barrier for those without some Spanish fluency.
- Many establishments are cash-only.
- Mixed reports on pricing, with some finding it expensive relative to other Latin American countries.
Caveats
- While safety has improved, some travelers still advise sticking to tourist areas and avoiding flashing valuables.
- Black travelers have reported being stared at in some areas, though usually without direct hostility.
- Spanish proficiency is highly recommended to navigate the country effectively.

The one thing I will say is that it's pricey for LATAM
I wouldn't rent a car but I find parking and driving pretty annoying, especially in cities.
ES is a relatively safe country and I have few qualms about walking around even at night. It did have a reputation as one of the world's most dangerous countries, but that has changed now that they've locked up the gang members in CECOT … People here are friendly and you will enjoy it more if you have some Spanish fluency. Also they use the American dollar which makes things simple.
For example El Salvador, Colombia
I've been to Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Coastal Rica, Honduras, Panama, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, and I'm planning a trip to Colombia this year. I've been equally impressed by the beaches (from the black volcanic beaches of El Salvador to the white sands of Útila and Veradero) as well as the night life in El Tunco and Sayulita.
Im from El Salvador— people may stare; in San Salvador going to the store or restaurant— but I don’t think people would attack you. The grandma being racist”— is probably because the grandma would say —las negritas, la mujer negra— but who knows exactly about the grandma
El Salvador has gotten a lot safer because anyone even connected to gangs is in prison (not judging, just a fact).
El Salvador is one of the safest countries in the world now. I'm a male, black, my wife travels with me, and I'm B2 level in Spanish. None of that matters OP go on the trip and relax.
This is foolishness I go every year without issue. She going to have a good time if she plans the trip accordingly. I love visiting El Salvador.
Stay with her family? I would not do this at all. It's cheap enough to get your own place.
