Pros

  • El Grande (like a war game without the war)
  • Classic area control. Funnily enough, my parents had an easier time understanding this one over Carcassonne but it's slightly higher in complexity. We had a fun 3p game, but should be better at more.
  • Not heavy, more like medium, but El Grande is super interactive. In general, area majority games are the most interactive ones
  • El Grande would be for when we have someone else as home and from what I’ve read, I like that it’s not multiplayer solitaire (we would hate that). I want interactivity and our decisions affecting other players someway
  • El Grande : still a great area control, smart card system.

Cons

  • Take an area control game or a high interaction game, think of Root, Chaos in the Old World, El Grande. They all play quicker at 2 players ... but it's just not as fun as with higher player counts.

Out of the top shelf games I would probably say Ultimate Railroads, El Grande and Abyss are the ones I've kept for the longest time because they just never cease to amaze me.
