Pros

  • Leipzig and Dresden are interesting too though. Or for a big change for up to the north sea and see Rügen
  • If you want mountains: Regensburg, Dresden, Prague, Salzburg
  • Consider a day or two in Dresden for another view of WW II.
  • Dresden is also about 2 hours away by train and really compact, 3 days would be good there. Don’t sleep on Berlin -or Dresden!
  • If you're bored and love architecture take a day trip to Dresden. It's truly a gorgeous town and has a lot of history (it was bombed to smithereens).

Cons

  • I think that a day trip to Dresden will be exhausting. It will leave you feeling like you are rushing around and only seeing tiny glimpses.
  • Spent 1 day in Dresden and for me it is only worth it if the commute is short or you have a lot of time, otherwise it is about all the same museums, old town and I didn't find anything unique at that time.

You could do Paris, Bruxelles, Amsterdam or Berlin for capitals an alternative could be in France Lyon, Genevieve in Switzerland (but is expensive), Rotterdam in Netherlands, Köln or Dresden in Germany.

I found Dresden to be fascinating as well and it’s not terribly far.
