There’s a lot of cliches and tropes. But I have fond memories of it as a great gateway into the fantasy genre. 100% recommend for the price.
Parent context: What is the character work like in this series? Thanks! Reply: Depends on the book but generally they're solid but very recognizable high fantasy archetypes. The major character who departs from the "Good Guys Good, Bad Guys Bad" nature of things is Raistlin Majere and he stars in a lot of the books as he's by far the readers' (and authors') favorite.
This series is why I read fantasy today.
The Legends trilogy is what got me into fantasy as a young adult and is why I have made a small living selling stories of dark antihero wizards.
I don't think the prose or the plot really stand out in any way but I think those books capture perfectly what it's like playing D&D and I really found them fun and a refreshing break from my other fantasy reading.
Sadly, as far as DL goes they never again hit their writing depth high of Legends. I enjoyed Lost Chronicles mostly, but it really started going a little downhill a little with War of Souls and the Amber trilogy, and I am sadly not a fan of the recent Destinies. Very dumbed down and poorly edited among other things.
Like, Dragonlance doesn’t care about fitting into your neat little fantasy box, it’s got wizards having emotional breakdowns, knights with too much honor for their own good, and kender who make you want to lock up your shiny things and your sanity.
Dragonlance or Legend of Drizzt Stock standard fantasy adventures. Definitely nothing ground-breaking, but very comforting. They're just fantasy books, completely readable and enjoyable.
