AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Dragon Age: Origins is frequently cited as a gold standard for RPG world-building and character development, though its gameplay mechanics and specific level designs draw mixed reactions. While many players praise its gritty, dark fantasy setting and deep lore—particularly its handling of mages—others find the tactical combat clunky and certain segments, like the Fade, to be tedious slogs.

Pros

  • Exceptional world-building and lore that sets a high standard for the RPG genre.
  • Gritty and mature storytelling that effectively tackles dark themes such as systemic prejudice and slavery.
  • Strong character development and engaging party interactions.
  • High replayability offered by diverse class builds and unique origin stories.
  • Deep party-based tactics system that allows for strategic gameplay.

Cons

  • Combat can feel clunky, repetitive, and occasionally frustrated by RNG mechanics.
  • The 'Fade' segment in the Circle Tower is widely criticized as slow and tedious.
  • Some dungeons and the final battle sequence are described as bland or overly focused on endless combat.
  • Roleplaying options and story depth may feel limited to those seeking a direct successor to older CRPGs like Baldur's Gate.

Caveats

  • The tactics system, while praised for its depth, is considered primitive by some compared to later iterations in the series.
  • The game's age is reflected in its maneuverability and technical feel, which may not appeal to players used to modern action-RPGs.

Best for

  • Fans of traditional BioWare-style RPGs and deep fantasy lore.
  • Players who enjoy tactical, party-based combat and managing character relationships.
  • Those looking for a dark, 'gritty' fantasy world with mature themes.

Avoid if

  • You dislike slow-paced dungeon crawling or 'slog' segments in games.
  • You prefer fluid, modern action-combat over older tactical systems.
  • You are frustrated by RNG-heavy combat mechanics.

I think I'm about halfway through this part of the game, and I'm enjoying it. I'm dying a lot, but I can always seem to figure out a way to win every fight eventually. At this point, I can say for sure that Dragon Age: Origins is better than any of the Mass Effect trilogy.

The first one clicked pretty early for me, and it was one of those games I had multiple playthroughs on. I liked Rogue, Warrior, and Wizard builds, and would do a new playthrough with a different party, almost immediately after finishing one playthrough.

In Dragon Age: Origins, you became a Grey Warden and fought off the Blight.

How the Dragon Age series handles mages is absolutely my favorite in video games. Such solid world building

Despite its age no pun intented the game did set the rpg standard where only a few can achieve this level of world building and character development.

On replay, I did like the player party a bit more than I did on release, building a relationship with them felt great. But once I moved onto other games, the characters in DAO quickly felt lackluster in retrospect. ... Gameplay was great overall, I loved the party-based combat and the tactics system, even if the tactics system was super primitive (DA2 really refined it and let me do some cool stuff). But it did drag on and on and on.
