DP-900
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
DP-900 is widely regarded as a high-value, beginner-friendly certification for those entering the Azure data ecosystem. It serves as a logical stepping stone for more advanced certifications like DP-100 or AZ-305 by providing a broad overview of Azure's data stack, including relational and non-relational databases, big data, and analytics. While many users find it easier than AZ-900, some caution that the exam questions can be surprisingly tricky or "sneaky" despite the foundational nature of the content.
Pros
- Excellent foundational overview of Azure data services and general database concepts.
- Helpful preliminary step for more difficult exams like AZ-305 and DP-100.
- Accessible to those with basic SQL knowledge but no prior cloud experience.
- Generally considered more logical and manageable than other 900-level exams like SC-900.
Cons
- Exam questions can be "tricky" and "sneaky," even for well-prepared candidates.
- Content can feel like a "biology exam" focused on memorization rather than hands-on application.
- High-level focus may be too basic for those with significant Azure data experience.
Caveats
- The exam focuses on high-level understanding and does not require deep, hands-on technical work.
- While often called "easy," the score required to pass may still demand focused revision.
Best for
- Beginners new to cloud data solutions.
- Project Managers (PMs) looking to understand Azure's data and AI stack.
- Candidates planning to take DP-100, DP-203, or AZ-305.
Avoid if
- You already have extensive professional experience with Azure data platforms.
- You are looking for a deep-dive technical course with hands-on labs.

Lots of free certs on offer for DP-xxx certs like 900, 700, etc. This is a growing area & certainly has a skill gap
If you're already comfy with SQL and basic data concepts, DP900 is pretty realistic to do now. It's more about understanding Azure data services at a high level, not hands-on deep work.
honestly DP-900 is more of a fundamentals exam than a “you must have real Azure experience” exam. It’s meant for people exactly in your situation, comfortable with data basics but new to cloud.
If anything, DP-900 he have been a better fundamentals choice if you're headed in the data scientist direction.
DP-900 for the general database understanding.
I’m glad I took DP-900. Even though it’s basically a biology exam about databases, I learned a lot about analytics and big data.
and DP-900 for Database Fundamentals.
For PMs interested in AI/data, a nice progression could be DP-900 (data fundamentals)
For PMs interested in tech/AI, good picks are AI-900 for AI basics, DP-900 for data fundamentals
As for **AI-900** and **DP-900**, they’re definitely worth it: * They’re beginner-friendly (probably 4–5/10 in difficulty). * Good for **building foundational knowledge** in AI and Data, especially if you’re targeting roles that touch on ML, analytics, or automation.
