DOOM Eternal
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
DOOM Eternal is a polarizing sequel that evolves the fast-paced combat of its predecessor into a more complex, high-skill action game. While many users praise its adrenaline-fueled gameplay and deep mechanics once they "click," others find the experience bogged down by mandatory resource management, frequent platforming, and a more "arcadey" aesthetic compared to DOOM 2016.
Pros
- Intense, fast-paced combat that is highly rewarding once mastered.
- Excellent movement mechanics, including a widely praised grappling hook.
- High production values in art, music, and overall immersion.
- Deep gameplay systems that allow for advanced techniques like rapid weapon switching.
Cons
- Frequent platforming segments that many users feel disrupt the combat flow.
- Prescriptive combat loop that forces players to micromanage ammo and health via specific kill types.
- Visual design and UI elements can feel overly "arcadey" and immersion-breaking.
- Hub areas and cutscenes are sometimes viewed as unnecessary interruptions to the action.
Caveats
- Has a steeper learning curve than DOOM 2016; several users noted it takes significant time to finally "click."
- The expansion of lore and story is divisive, with some enjoying the depth and others finding it unnecessary for a DOOM title.
Best for
- Players seeking a high-skill, demanding FPS with deep mechanics.
- Fans of movement-based shooters who enjoy high-speed arena combat.
- Those who want a sequel that significantly expands on the mechanics of the previous entry.
Avoid if
- You prefer the streamlined, atmospheric, and simpler "run and gun" style of DOOM 2016.
- You have a strong dislike for platforming in first-person shooters.
- You find mandatory resource-rotation mechanics (like the chainsaw for ammo) to be an annoying gimmick.

I did finish Doom Eternal, and even the DLCs, but I merely had an okay experience. It had some highlights, and sometimes I would get into this flow during fights that did feel good, but it wasn't enough.
Eternal was fun, but 2016's felt more streamlined and enjoyable.
yeah, it seemed like eternal was a parody of a doom game. Especially after 2016 had amazing world building and a decent story. But the action of eternal is unmatched
Parent context: Eternal is one of those games that I can fully understand why some people bounce off of. Its a very demanding. very chaotic game that absolutely demands you play it the way it wants you to play. Reply: Very much so, yes. The demand to play a certain way was exactly why I found it exhausting.
I've been having a blast with Doom Eternal now that it was finally released on gog, it's still a bummer how much Bethesda wants to slowly integrate DRM in the cosmethic DLCs, but the main game and the expansions can be played with no issue.
once you get into it, you can’t get enough of this adrenaline-fueled adventure. ... It took longer than Doom 2016 to click, but once it did, I felt almost as unstoppable.
it’s not as easy to play as Doom 2016 but once you get into it, you can’t get enough of this adrenaline-fueled adventure. ... It took longer than Doom 2016 to click, but once it did, I felt almost as unstoppable.
it’s not as easy to play as Doom 2016 but once you get into it, you can’t get enough of this adrenaline-fueled adventure. ... once it did, I felt almost as unstoppable. Plus, it was always fun to conquer each and every level and discover all the secrets.
I did a run through Doom: Eternal on "Nightmare" difficulty with it by using layers to do weapon switching
Eternal and TDA jumped the shark trying to flesh out a “serious story”. Loses all the charm and turns it into a generic, forgettable story. Huge downgrade. That said the combat and mechanics in Eternal are incredible and peak FPS.
