AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Dominican Republic is widely recognized as a budget-friendly destination for all-inclusive resort vacations, often described as a 'fly and flop' location. While many travelers appreciate the value, historical sites like Santo Domingo, and specific beaches like Saona Island, there is a notable divide regarding safety, with some users reporting a high sense of unease outside of resort areas.

Pros

  • Excellent value and 'bang for your buck' compared to other Caribbean destinations
  • Strong selection of adults-only all-inclusive resorts
  • Authentic historical experiences available in Santo Domingo
  • Generally more affordable flights and group Airbnb options
  • Beautiful beaches, specifically noted around Saona Island

Cons

  • Significant safety concerns reported by some, including sightings of automatic weapons and warnings to stay near hotels
  • Occasional issues with seaweed (sargassum) affecting beach quality
  • Perceptions of some areas being 'shady' or 'overrated'

Caveats

  • Safety reports are highly polarized, ranging from 'amazing and safe' to 'least safe feeling' spots visited
  • Travelers are often advised by locals to stay on main roads at night and remain close to their accommodations

Best for

  • Budget-conscious travelers
  • All-inclusive resort enthusiasts
  • Large groups looking for affordable Airbnbs
  • Short-term 'fly and flop' vacations

Avoid if

  • You are uncomfortable with visible security measures like armed guards
  • You want to explore freely at night without safety concerns
  • Pristine, seaweed-free water is your primary requirement

It’s a relatively cheap place to go for a week’s fly&flop, if that’s what you’re into.

DR seems shady in many spots to me.

Guys at 7-11 with automatic weapons.....mountain guerillas....locals warning me to stay on main roads at night ....."stay close to hotel" . One of the least safe (feeling) spots I've been. I felt slightly uneasy most everywhere I went......

Your best options of adults only all inclusives are going to be Mexico, DR, and Jamaica

I've done both, and would recommend Dominican Republic over Jamaica. The beaches are nicer (do a day trip out to Saona Island) and I find you get better bang for your buck. If you like history and authenticity, spend a day in Santo Domingo.
