Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is widely celebrated as a landmark CRPG, praised for its immense player freedom and deep, reactive tactical combat. While often compared to Baldur's Gate 3, users frequently note that it is significantly more challenging and less cinematic. Opinions are mixed regarding its difficulty spikes and the dual-armor system, which some find rewarding and others describe as a slog. The game is highly regarded for its writing and characters, though some players find the pacing in later acts—specifically Act 2—to be exhausting.

Pros

  • Exceptional player freedom and environmental reactivity
  • Deep, complex tactical combat with significant depth
  • Memorable character writing and strong narrative aesthetics
  • High replayability and value, especially when found on sale
  • Masterful implementation of the CRPG genre

Cons

  • Steep difficulty curve that can feel 'blatantly unfair' at times
  • Unhelpful in-game journal often necessitates using an external wiki
  • Pacing issues in Act 2 (Reaper's Coast) which can feel overlong
  • Over-reliance on environmental fire effects in combat
  • Dual-armor system (physical/magic) can make combat feel tedious

Caveats

  • Console versions lack mouse support, which some players find frustrating
  • Significant difficulty gap between the easiest setting and default difficulty
  • Crafting systems are often described as superfluous or poorly explained
  • Less cinematic presentation than modern Larian titles like BG3

Best for

  • Fans of deep, tactical CRPGs who enjoy high difficulty
  • Players who prioritize mechanical depth and player agency
  • Those looking for a challenging follow-up to Baldur's Gate 3

Avoid if

  • You prefer streamlined, linear narratives with clear directions
  • You are frustrated by complex stat management and status effects
  • You want a cinematic, movie-like experience over tactical gameplay

What redditors said (10 of 25)

The game isn't perfect. Not all of its systems are intuitive or explained very well. The crafting is mostly superfluous. It's fairly difficult at times on the default difficulty and sometimes you'll encounter things that *are* blatantly unfair. But on the default difficulty you really don't need to get every morsel of xp and you do have plenty of margin to mess up your build.

If we're counting video games, Lohse from Divinity: Original Sin 2, as well!

I have bought (on sale) Divinity Original Sin 2 since I've heard it's literally peak, and while I do appreciate how much freedom you have (to someone who played a lot of Skyrim this was straight up shocking), but the game is also extremely difficult (I've played at 2nd difficulty, forgot the name). No matter where I went or what I did, it always ended with death. Game throws fully equipped enemies at you while you are half naked with a stick. I did switch to easiest difficulty eventually, but then game started to play itself, gap between 1st and 2nd difficulty is colossal. I did try to refund it, but I had 2.1 hours, so Steam support told me to piss off. So accidentally it became the worst game purchase I've ever made.

Shadow dropping the update while at the same time putting the game on sale was an instant buy for me since I didn’t have the PS4 version yet. Even if the game is a little old, Larian has won me over with these kinds of practices.

It's biggest problem was coming out after Divinity Original Sin 2. That CRPG just took the wind out of the sails (pin intended) of PoE2 before it even launched.

There were a ton of replays here. V Rising. Terraria, Terraria, Terraria again. Secrets of Grindea. Raft. Divinity Original Sin 2. We Were Here. The Division. Borderlands 2.

Parent context: How is this game compared to BG3? Did you like it better? Reply: It's less cinematic and A lot more challenging than BG3; the encounters and battle mechanics, have a lot more depth and reactivity. I couldn't recommend it more.

Parent context: How much different is it to BG3? I know it's a different system but in terms of QOL and other design choices? Reply: Well, for starters it doesn't have the cinematic dialogues of bg3. Also there's more fire.
