Pros

  • If you acclimate poorly consider getting a prescription for diamox.
  • Get a prescription for 3-4 Diamox tablets. Before going up, car camp at Onion Valley CG for a couple of nights and day hike from there a bit. Makes a HUGE difference.
  • You can also take Diamox which seems to help mitigate symptoms in some capacity
  • Thankfully a few years ago I found out about Diamox prescription medicene. It helps tremendously but even when I get above 12k, I def am feeling it and the Diamox doesn't completely relieve the issues.
  • consider talking to a doc about diamox (acetazolamide).

Cons

  • I hated the way I felt on Diamox.
  • Another side effect of Diamox is that carbonated beverages will taste awful. It can speed up the acclimation process though.
  • I think there's two things that helped me. 1) is just taking Diamox. ... Diamox can help some people although I don’t love the side effects personally.
  • I've also tried Diamox, but it's not side-effect free. It makes you pee a lot and some people have diarrhea etc.
  • I have been taking diamox for about 2 days now before my arrival and have had bad side effects, ex: I was tingling, dizzy, could not move my top lip, etc.

Get a new doctor, diamox is a game changer in this situation. I live in Boulder now so it’s not an issue, but I used to live in chicago and going to Breck would duck me up. The diamox is a game changer.

Diamox (acetazolamide) prophylactically can help prevent symptoms - You'll want to take it starting 24-48 hours before you go up to altitude and continue to take it twice per day (At least from my experience).
