I lived in Dhaka off and on for awhile, working on a malaria study. Wonderful people, but I cried tears of joy when I finally boarded the flight to leave for good. I'll never return, and this is coming from a guy who loves big, crazy, insane cities. Enough was enough.
As someone who has grown up in Dhaka, but now lives abroad (might have to move back soon due to visa expiring), I absolutely cannot stress this enough- there isn’t a city globally that is so full of life. Yes in the literal sense, but also the energy is infectious, especially if you understand the language/customs. Everyone is hustling, almost everyone has a side hustle and WE’RE ALWAYS IN A HURRY. I understand if some of you feel this city/country is ‘beneath you’, but there’s something magical about growing up in this city. It’s a city that makes New York feel quiet, almost tame. The energy is definitely feral, but also infectious. I won’t say please come visit, because Dhaka itself is a city to survive in, not necessarily to visit.
