Devolution (Max Brooks)
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Devolution by Max Brooks is generally well-received as a fun and occasionally terrifying take on the Bigfoot legend, often praised for its isolated setting and 'found footage' style. While many readers find it a gripping survival story, a common point of contention is the initial cast of characters, who some describe as insufferable before they undergo development.
Pros
- Highly recommended audiobook version
- Successfully makes Bigfoot a genuinely scary antagonist
- Engaging 'found footage' or lost-journal narrative style
- Compelling exploration of isolated survival and human 'comeuppance'
- Satisfying character growth for those who stick with the story
Cons
- Protagonists can be extremely annoying or 'insufferable' in the first half
- Some readers found the prose formulaic and the plot unengaging
Caveats
- The horror is described by some as 'campy' rather than purely terrifying
- Requires patience with the characters early on to reach the payoff
Best for
- Bigfoot and cryptid horror enthusiasts
- Fans of isolated survival stories
- Audiobook listeners looking for high production value
Avoid if
- You have a low tolerance for unlikable or elitist characters
- You prefer literary horror over formulaic or campy survival tropes

Devolution and Fantasticland - two best audiobooks in existence (horror) imo.
Parent context: Devolution by Max Brooks had some goofiness by I really liked it. Read it in three sittings, I think. Reply: DNF’d it. It is very Zionist, alongside the author. I only realized when I hit the chapter that featured the perspective of the Israeli soldier sister and I looked into the author. It literally relates “wild feral bigfoots” to Palestinians.
