Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Destination CISSP is highly regarded as a concise, visually engaging alternative to the dense Official Study Guide (OSG). Users frequently praise its readability and lack of "fluff," making it a preferred primary or secondary study resource for the CISSP exam. While it is often cited as the "backbone" of successful study plans, some users find it lacks the granular detail found in more exhaustive texts.

Pros

  • Highly concise and readable compared to the Official Study Guide (OSG).
  • Strong visual elements and layout that aid in understanding complex topics.
  • Effective for building a solid foundation without unnecessary filler.
  • Frequently rated 9/10 or 10/10 by successful exam candidates.

Cons

  • May lack hyper-specific or granular details required for some niche exam topics.
  • Practice questions and tests are sometimes described as "light" or less effective than the book itself.
  • Can feel like a collection of notes rather than a deep dive for some users.

Caveats

  • Many users recommend pairing it with the OSG to ensure coverage of hyper-specific details.
  • The accompanying app's questions are occasionally described as wordy or confusing compared to other test simulators like Quantum Exams.

Best for

  • Visual learners who struggle with dense, text-heavy textbooks.
  • Candidates with prior IT risk management or security experience (e.g., CISA holders).
  • Those looking for a clear, digestible primary study guide.

Avoid if

  • You prefer exhaustive, encyclopedic detail over conciseness.
  • You are looking for a single resource that provides both deep theory and the most rigorous practice exams available.

Destination Certification Book 10/10: I used this as the main source, but only because I am old school (law school probably played big part so I have to have a hard copy of stuff). Very similar content to the masterclass but without John's tips at the end.

I think Destination CISSP lets you use their practice test banks so if you dont want a full exam use their app to just practice.

Destination CISSP book - I read each chapter and then went back through it highlighting and writing out notes in an actual notebook, because I'm old.

destination cissp is not overkill if you already know the material but need to pin down the isc2 mindset. it’s structured in a way that cuts the fluff a lot of other books keep around

The Destination CISSP one is way more digestible so you're not missing out on much by skipping the brick

I really struggle with learning from books (hence why I’m avoiding the OSG) but this book is pretty great.
