Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Delta Air Lines is generally regarded as a reliable and premium choice among major carriers, with users frequently praising its customer service and operational consistency compared to competitors. However, recent feedback highlights significant frustrations regarding high pricing for international routes, rigid refund policies for cancelled legs of business class tickets, and occasional operational meltdowns involving high cancellation rates. While many travelers express a strong preference for Delta's service and hub efficiency, others find the 'premium' price tag difficult to justify when compared to budget or mid-tier alternatives.

Pros

  • Strong reputation for customer service, including instances of honoring refunds outside strict windows.
  • Highly trusted hub operations, particularly in Atlanta (ATL).
  • Lenient policies regarding pets in the cabin according to some travelers.
  • Efficient booking and management through their direct website compared to third-party engines.
  • Extensive partner network (KLM, Air France) allowing for seamless international connections.

Cons

  • Premium pricing can be significantly higher than competitors for similar routes.
  • Reports of rigid refund calculations where a used outbound leg can negate the remaining value of a cancelled return leg.
  • Occasional periods of high cancellation rates compared to other major airlines.
  • Some international business class products are described as dated despite high costs.
  • Tendency to rebook passengers only on their own metal after cancellations rather than utilizing other carriers.

Caveats

  • Opinions on value are highly polarized; some users find the service worth the premium, while others view it as overpriced.
  • Customer service experiences can vary significantly depending on individual staff members during overbooked situations.
  • The brand name 'Delta' also appears in home improvement contexts (faucets), where it is highly regarded for part availability and warranty.

Best for

  • Travelers prioritizing reliability and customer service over the lowest possible fare.
  • Passengers flying through major hubs like Atlanta.
  • Those who prefer booking directly with an airline to ensure better support when issues arise.

Avoid if

  • You are strictly budget-conscious and find budget carriers like Frontier acceptable.
  • You are booking expensive international business class and expect the most modern cabin hardware.
  • You require high flexibility for partial refunds on multi-leg journeys.

I trust Delta and ATL over United + IAD any day of the week.... independently and together.

I booked a business class return from Heathrow to Chicago with delta, the outbound leg went as planned but on the return leg the weather disruption across the north east caused my flight to be cancelled, the replacement flight was the following day which got me back late, as I had flexible tickets that could be refunded.

Today I checked the status on cancelling the flight and now I’m told the return leg had 0 value as the outbound had concumed the cost of the flight. This feels ludicrous, especially for business.

The staff (Christina) appeared 15 minutes later. I asked for an explanation. I did not get it. I asked for an apology at least. Nothing.

I learnt later that they had overbooked the flight. The staff, Christina, behaved badly.

Based on this post Delta seems pretty lenient about pets in the cabin.

Keep looking at the Delta site, as I've always found it to be the same or better than any booking engine

This past week Delta has had nearly 4x the cancellations that United or AA has but that’s usually not the case.

For instance, I just did a redemption for a Delta flight direct to my destination. The cash price of the ticket was $850 on Delta's website.
