Reddit take

Not enough linked mention summaries yet; the source excerpts below are the evidence.

Pros

  • Go to Utrecht. Delft. Pretty much anywhere outside Amsterdam.
  • Also Haarlem, just 15 minutes from Amsterdam, Delft, Gouda are worth a visit.
  • If you're going to The Hague or Rotterdam, I'd also go to Delft (right in between the two cities).
  • Outside Amsterdam: same story. Haarlem, Delft, Utrecht - all fine in August. Day trips are easy and worth doing.
  • If you want a smaller, pretty city to walk around? The most obvious choice would be maybe Delft or Gouda. They both have canals, they are mostly flat, nice old houses, very traditional.

The Netherlands has a few good options like Utrecht, the Hague, and Delft. In Germany/France you might consider Alsace region like Colmar and Freiburg.

Geographically speaking, combining De Biesbosch with Kinderdijk makes sense, as does combining Delft and Den Haag.
