Death Stranding
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Death Stranding is a highly polarizing title that replaces traditional action with a complex, innovative traversal and delivery gameplay loop. While many players praise its stunning visuals, unique social systems, and fresh approach to open-world mechanics, others find it frustratingly slow, bogged down by a dense UI, and interrupted by repetitive cutscenes. The game is frequently described as a "love it or hate it" experience that demands patience and curiosity.
Pros
- Innovative 'Social Strand' system that makes players feel connected through shared structures
- Stunning, crisp graphics and immersive world-building
- Satisfying core loop of path planning and mastering delivery upgrades
- A fresh and challenging take on the traditional 'fetch quest' mechanic
Cons
- Repetitive vehicle cutscenes that can become irritating over time
- Dense, noisy, and occasionally overwhelming UI
- Fiddly fine movement and frustrating stealth/BT encounters
- Long-winded ending and disjointed story pacing
Caveats
- The use of real actor faces can occasionally make the game feel like a 'celebrity cameo fest'
- BT (enemy) sections are often cited as a point where players quit due to tension or frustration
- The experience is intentionally slow and requires a significant time commitment to appreciate
Best for
- Players bored with generic open-world games seeking something fresh
- Fans of meditative, slow-paced exploration similar to Red Dead Redemption 2
- Those who enjoy complex traversal and inventory management systems
Avoid if
- You have a low tolerance for repetitive tasks or 'fetch quest' structures
- You prefer fast-paced action and combat over traversal mechanics
- You find dense menus and inventory balancing tedious

Parent context: What was the most common area players quit in the first game? Reply: I found maneuvering around BTs to be too tense, though the game is on my backlog of games I'd love to give a second shot to.
Might be weird, that moment made me convinced I'd love playing Death Stranding.
I have not played 2 but 1 fails in its central fantasy more often than not. "Help others" "build shelters" "plan ahead" for what? So much of the game is just flat terrain with no reason to prepare other than a basic ladder, time fall and BTs are a non issue
The gameplay of Death Stranding is super unique and ticks pretty much all the boxes that I wanted out of a logistics sim/survival hybrid. While it could have been better balanced, I thought the core gameplay was so unique and special that I played for over 200 hours in the endgame.

The intro really gripped me. So atmospheric and unique. Sadly I just didn't love the gameplay enough to continue. The whole walking around and making sure your character doesn't lose the packages, maintaining his balance just didn't feel fun to me.
I hated it with a passion, but Im glad that it exists and that people like Kojima are doing something unique with a high budget behind it.
I kept playing and playing...and playing... until I realized "wait, I'm loving this, wtf". A strange experience, amazing game.
I kinda love this game, I just don't like those boss fights. They are too difficult for me 😞.
Death Stranding is a game about overcoming one Miyazaki poison swamp after another... Its also one of very few non-RPG open world games, that makes use of its open world for something else, than boring checklist objectives. Its also super polished, AAA game, with top tier Hollywood talent, and extremely niche gameplay... Death Stranding is a GOTY contender for me.
