I liked Wayside School books at the same time as Captain Underpants! And Phantom Tollbooth, Boxcar Children, Dealing with Dragons, Harriet the Spy, Stuart Little, Diana Wynne Jones, Louis Sachar, and Beverly Cleary.

It's YA, but it's Patricia C. Wrede, so lovely writing. Dealing with Dragons is the first book in the series.
