Days Gone is a polarizing open-world zombie title often described as "comfort food" for fans of the genre. While it is praised for its unique horde mechanics, atmospheric world, and satisfying progression loops, it is frequently criticized for its writing and a protagonist that many find grating. Opinions are mixed, with some viewing it as an underrated gem and others as an "aggressively mid" experience that fails to meet the narrative standards of other Sony first-party exclusives.
Pros
- Unique and intense horde combat mechanics that offer a distinct gameplay experience.
- Satisfying progression system focused on upgrading the player's bike and weaponry.
- Excellent atmospheric design and audio, particularly the environmental effects like rain.
- Beautifully realized open-world setting in post-apocalyptic Oregon.
Cons
- Writing and dialogue are widely criticized, with some users describing it as "preteen fan fiction" quality.
- The protagonist, Deacon St. John, is highly divisive; his personality and radio outbursts are often cited as annoying.
- Pacing issues, with several players noting the game feels too long and contains unnecessary "fat."
- Repetitive mission structure that relies on a constant series of instructions.
Caveats
- The game's reputation is still affected by its poor technical state at launch, though more recent players find it much improved.
- Narrative quality is significantly lower than comparable Sony titles like The Last of Us, according to many users.
Best for
- Fans of open-world zombie games who prioritize gameplay and atmosphere over story.
- Players who enjoy a steady loop of resource gathering and equipment upgrades.
- Those looking for a substantial amount of content that often goes on sale for a low price.
Avoid if
- You expect high-caliber character writing and a tight, well-paced narrative.
- You find vocal or "petulant" protagonists to be a dealbreaker.
- You are tired of the standard triple-A open-world formula of following map markers and instructions.

Days Gone Ps4 3/5 One I somehow skipped despite being a Sony fan. I enjoyed it a lot at first, especially the progression loop of upgrading weapons and your bike, which really hooked me. As the game went on it started to wear thin, especially in the later stages. A great idea that just ran a bit too long and not one I would go back to.
PS4 on its last two years (2019/2020) had Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, FF7 Remake and Nioh 2
Yeah, they have the average selling price of Days Gone at like 32 bucks. It was $12 for sooooo long
tl;dr: the game was way over budget and missed several launch windows; launched like shit and played like shit; heavily criticized for its writing and characters / very low Metacritic score for Sony; NOT up to Sony's own *incredibly high internal standards* for a first-party game.
I’m glad you touched on the atmosphere because that’s one thing I really loved about Days Gone. I especially liked the audio. ... The rain audio, specifically, was second only to Death Stranding imo.
But he isn't meant to be dimwitted, he is presented to us as intelligent. ... He reminds me of an early 90/00s protagonist and doesn't fit alongside Sonys style of character e.g. Nathan Drake, Chloe, Ellie, Abby, Joel, Kratos and Atreus, Jin Sakai. Even younger characters like Aloy, who should be a bit childish come off better.
Parent context: Respectfully I have to disagree. I found Deacon so endearing that I was able to overlook some of the game’s narrative and writing issues. ... Reply: Because of Deacon's need to scream in rage at every group of baddies I rode past or talk to himself to constantly remind the player of the story I found I enjoyed it all a lot more if I imagined he was entirely gibbering nuts and just barely managed to held it together for cutscenes.
I think most of the game is fine but Deacon is one of the worst lead characters of a modern "Sony style" game, his interactions with Lisa and O Brian are exceptionally bad and he acts on the radio like a petulant teenager, not a biker who survived an apocalypse.
Days Gone was like comfort food for me. It wasn't revolutionary in any way but it perfectly executed what it set out to do.
Days Gone is an open world action game set in post-apocalyptic, zombie infested Oregon. ... To sum up, it’s basically Open World Last of Us, but with worse writing. On the flip side, it’s basically Open World Last of Us but with better gameplay. ... Despite my grumbling, I had fun with Days Gone. I think it could’ve been much better had the devs trimmed some of the game’s fat, and tightened up the story (did we really need multiple villains?), but overall I enjoyed myself.
