AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Dark Souls 2 is the most polarizing entry in the Soulsborne series, frequently described as containing both the best and worst elements of the franchise. While it is often labeled the 'weakest' of the trilogy, many players praise its unique atmosphere, massive build variety, and improved game balance, even as they criticize its clunky animations and controversial mechanical choices.

Pros

  • Exceptional atmosphere and melancholy vibe, particularly in the hub area of Majula
  • Extensive build variety, including the 'powerstance' mechanic for dual-wielding different weapon types
  • Strong standalone story and lore that effectively explores the series' core themes
  • Improved game balance and satisfying combat animations, such as backstabs
  • Large scope with many handcrafted areas and a 'less is more' approach to exploration

Cons

  • Animations can feel stiff, sluggish, and lack the 'weight' found in other titles
  • Downgraded sound design, specifically 'squishy' attack sounds and uninspired boss music
  • Frustrating level design in specific areas, with the Iron Keep being a frequent point of criticism
  • Poor keyboard and mouse controls that can be a barrier to entry
  • Controversial mechanics like the 'adaptability' stat and a more linear world progression

Caveats

  • The game's reputation is significantly more divisive than Dark Souls 1 or 3
  • Some players find the combat 'clunky' in a way that is satisfying, while others find it a dealbreaker
  • Opinions are split on whether it is better to play the trilogy in order or start with this entry for lore purposes

Best for

  • Players who enjoy deep character build experimentation
  • Fans of atmospheric, melancholy world-building
  • Those looking for a massive RPG with a slower, more methodical combat pace

Avoid if

  • You prefer the faster, more fluid movement and animations of later FromSoftware titles
  • You are sensitive to 'unfair' enemy placement or frustrating level design
  • You intend to play primarily with keyboard and mouse controls

DS2 is my most played Dark Souls game. It has the best new game+ in the series imo with the added enemies everywhere on top of being able to make each individual area go into its NG+ levels early by using a certain item.

I'm completely surprised by how much I enjoyed this play-through. ... The overall tone and atmosphere of the game is what really drew me in. It feels more personal and intimate than the other games in the series

Parent context: I think ds3 is a great game but probably my least favorite of them all. Reply: I'm with you. 2 is my still my favourite.

The vibes of DS2 just hit different it's so good. Mejula is in competition for my favourite hub zone in any game ever purely on the strength of its vibes.

Say what you will about this game, it's the one souls game I've invested the most hours into. More than Elden Ring, even. And I've played and beaten them all. The replayability is insane so is the PvP.

I’ve tried to get into DS2 four separate times now. I really dig the sort of dreamlike high fantasy vibes and the art direction. The problem I have with it is it feels hard for the sake of being hard ... it’s just gank after gank after gank. I also think it feels weirdly clunky and jankier than DS1 which is weird really.

Ds2, whether it's because of having a different team or it's developmentalt troubles it has an almost dream like quality, It actually requires patience that people say that DS1 does. And it has so many cool little ideas like breaking doors, breaking walls, knocking on doors so an npc open it from the other side
