DALI IO-12
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The DALI IO-12 is a high-end wireless headphone frequently praised for its technical performance, particularly its instrument separation and soundstage, which some users find superior to competitors like the Focal Bathys. While it is noted for a 'velvety' and detailed sound, opinions are mixed regarding its musicality; some users find it lacks energy and vibrance, describing the sound as not very dynamic. Its physical size and high price point are also common points of contention.
Pros
- Exceptional instrument separation and spacing
- Wide soundstage for a closed-back headphone
- High level of detail and instrumental nuance
- Comfortable fit with less ear compression than competitors
- Scales significantly in detail and energy when used with a high-quality amplifier
Cons
- Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) is considered underwhelming
- Sound signature can lack 'energy,' 'vibrance,' and dynamics
- Large physical profile that may be too bulky for public use
- High price point that some users feel is not justified by the feature set
Caveats
- The fit may be too loose for users with smaller heads, leading to the headphones slipping
- There are user concerns regarding the long-term durability of the leather outer headband
- Performance is highly dependent on the source; they benefit greatly from 'stronger control' via a good amp
Best for
- Critical listening where instrument separation and detail are priorities
- Users who find other high-end wireless headphones too physically clamping
- Audiophiles who intend to use their wireless headphones with dedicated amplifiers at home
Avoid if
- Top-tier Active Noise Cancelling is your primary requirement
- You prefer a 'fun' or highly dynamic and energetic sound signature
- You have a smaller head and need a very secure, tight fit
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age of 268 days), which may affect relevance in the fast-changing wireless headphone market.

I personally didn't enjoy the Dali IO-12 that much. Size indeed is big and you catch attention with them in public. Noise cancelling is a bit underwhelming. Sound wise I think they all around lack energy and vibrance.
This changes, though, if you start feeding them with a good amp. You realize that indeed they put speaker drivers in them that profit from stronger control. Bass tightens, mids and heights get detailed and full of energy, stage increases quite a lot and they are well rounded.
I could live with dali io12 and go on without missing this HD800s.

I think, maybe, the Dali IO-12?
Parent context: I owned the Bathys MG and Dali IO-12. I haven't tried the HDB 630, but my brother owns the Momentum 4 so I tested that. My favorite out of these are the Bathys MG. Dali IO-12 is not dynamic. Reply: As a Dali IO-12 owner I agree: "lack energy and vibrance."
Dali IO-12 is not dynamic.
If you value soundstage a lot there’s the Dali IO-12.
I do find the Bathys to be more comfortable than the Dali's - on the Dali's I don't need to extend them at all and they just about right, but I can feel them slip if I move my head around a lot - which isn't the case with the Bathys - I guess I need a bigger head.
the Dali's had a very noticeable change to the instrument spacing. The soundstage isn't crazy different, but the spacing between the instruments is and really allows you to hear things that, while you can hear them beautifuly on the Bathys, are separate and distinct on the Dalis.
