Cusco is absolutely amazing and should not be skipped.
Lima, Cusco and the Sacred Valley are all great and the food is some of my favorite in the world.
I went straight to Cusco to acclimate for 3 days. I was fine, my friend was not and a couple people on our hiking tour had to back out
Seems like if you can't get an actual ticket to Machu Picchu right now, just plan on going to Cusco anyway and see if your hotel or a local tour agency can help you out. And if it doesn't work out, just check out the sites around Cusco and around the Sacred Valley since you're there anyway.
If you shift any time around, I’d say spend more time in Cusco or better yet, sacred valley.
If you enjoy very fast paced travel and don't have any issues adjusting to the altitude (1 day in Cusco before going even higher during the trek is not enough for many people) then you'll be fine.
