Cozumel is highly regarded as a premier destination for water sports and culinary experiences, offering a relaxed island atmosphere distinct from the mainland. It is frequently recommended for its vibrant Mexican culture, extensive all-inclusive options, and world-class snorkeling and diving, though visitors must navigate logistical factors like ferry transfers and variable sea conditions.
Pros
- Excellent snorkeling and scuba diving with high visibility
- Highly praised local food scene
- Relaxed and authentic island vibe
- Rich Mexican cultural experience
- Good selection of all-inclusive resorts
Cons
- Strong ocean currents can make boating and swimming challenging
- Periodic issues with sargassum (seaweed) accumulation
- Requires a ferry or boat transfer to reach from the mainland
Caveats
- Snorkeling quality is highly dependent on the specific location and time of day
- Some popular spots are better suited for deep diving than shallow snorkeling due to depth
- Travelers often visit via cruise ship or day trips from Playa Del Carmen, which may limit the experience
Best for
- Scuba diving enthusiasts and snorkelers
- Food-focused travelers
- Vacationers seeking a laid-back island environment
Avoid if
- You want to avoid boat-dependent logistics
- You are a weak swimmer concerned about strong currents

Cozumel/Mexico City for mexican culture.
Unlike Cozumel which requires boating and oftentimes strong currents.
I recommend staying close to Playa Del Carmen. I think you can take a ferry to Cozumel or get a tour boat to go snorkeling (I never did it).

Disclaimer that I have been to none of these, but recommendations from personal friends/family: - Mexico: Cozumel or Isla Holbox (nonstop + drive to ferry)
Cozumel has sargassum issues at times, but also reefs, Mayan ruins, etc.
For snorkeling, look at Cozumel or Isla Mujeres!
If someone takes a cruise and docks in Cozumel or Barcelona for the day, is it fair to say they’ve been to Mexico or Spain?
