Control (video game)
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Control is widely praised for its unique atmosphere, brutalist architecture, and its blend of supernatural powers with third-person shooting. While many consider it one of Remedy's best titles, particularly for its 'Ashtray Maze' level and SCP-inspired lore, some players find the combat repetitive and the in-game map difficult to navigate.
Pros
- Exceptional level design, specifically the 'Ashtray Maze'
- Strong atmosphere and 'weird' narrative inspired by Lynch, X-Files, and SCP lore
- Satisfying mix of gunplay and supernatural powers
- Highly detailed and destructible environments within 'The Oldest House'
- Robust accessibility features that allow players to customize difficulty
Cons
- The in-game map is frequently described as terrible and difficult to use
- Combat can feel repetitive or 'rough around the edges' toward the end of the game
- High system requirements can lead to performance issues or crashes on some hardware
- The story's mysteries are sometimes more compelling than their eventual reveals
Caveats
- The game is computationally demanding; users with older systems may struggle with performance or the final DLC
- While the map is poor, players often find the in-game environmental signage more useful for navigation
- Opinions on the gameplay loop are mixed, with some finding it a generic cover shooter despite the powers
Best for
- Fans of surrealist or eerie fiction like Twin Peaks and The X-Files
- Players who enjoy brutalist aesthetics and environmental storytelling
- Fans of superpower-based action games
Avoid if
- You have a low-end PC that may not handle the game's technical demands
- You are easily frustrated by poor navigation systems and confusing maps
- You prefer straightforward military shooters over metaphysical or 'weird' narratives
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 122-month half-life. The evidence comes from a window spanning early to late 2025 with a median age of 576 days, reflecting a stable consensus on the game's quality and technical issues.

the overall feel of gunplay / powers mix is one of the very best iterations of the "shooter with a person who has superpowers" that Remedy has done (when comparing Max Payne, Control and this game).
Control had certain vibes I associate with Lynch. That unsettling eerie other breaching into our world is well emulated in parts of the game.
Control. Fucking hyped for the sequel.
I’m loving Control, can’t wait to see what they do in the sequel.
I fucking loved Control. I am here for this no question.
Parent context: It was $5 on the PS store a few weeks ago, just started playing it and it was definitely worth the money. Reply: The ashtray maze might be my favorite level in any game I have ever played.
Yes, if this looks good to you then if you haven't played the original you owe it to yourself to do so. It holds up extremely well in basically every way. It's probably Remedy's best game, slept on because they pissed off their target audience making it Epic exclusive.
Control is my all time favorite game, I'm fucking stoked!!
Parent context: Never played the first. Worth playing through? Reply: Yes absolutely. The game's setting, visual direction, and general atmosphere is novel for an AAA game. The combat is a bit rough around the edges but the game's accessibility features allow you to take the frustration off if you get tired of it
I'm playing for the first time right now, and can't really do more than 1-1.5 hours at a time because of the tension. Great atmosphere though.
