It’s doable, but if you want a smaller place, look at some of the villages in Alsace instead of Strasbourg, which is among the 10 largest cities in France. The old city surrounding the Cathedral is very quaint and pretty, but Strasbourg is anything but small. Look at smaller places like Riquewihr, Colmar, Sélestat for example.

Basel was a nice city, if you have time in Basel maybe go to Colmar in France, should be about 40 minutes by train. A lovely place to spend the morning or a day.

We stayed in Colmar and rented a car. There are bunch of famous little towns around Colmar to explore. We also drove to the German side and even went to Switzerland for a day (only about 2-2.5 hour drive to Alps)
