Citizen Sleeper

Citizen Sleeper is a narrative-focused RPG set on a space station, widely praised for its atmosphere, music, and empathetic storytelling. Players manage resources and actions using a simple dice-based mechanic that creates a tense survival loop in the early game. While the story and world-building are highly regarded, some players find that the gameplay mechanics become trivial or repetitive once the system is mastered or the character is fully upgraded.
Pros
- Compelling narrative with empathetic characters and meaningful choices
- Exceptional atmospheric soundtrack and art style
- Addictive resource management loop involving money, energy, and condition
- Simple but effective dice-based gameplay mechanics
Cons
- Gameplay can become trivial or feel like a 'desk job' in the late game
- Mixed opinions on writing depth, with some finding it basic or 'YA level'
- Significant difficulty spike in the DLC content compared to the base game
- Mechanical tension disappears once specific abilities (like re-rolling) are unlocked
Caveats
- The game is primarily a text-driven experience similar to a visual novel
- Resource management can feel like a repetitive grind if you miss time-sensitive deadlines
- Some players felt that late-game decisions lacked the impact promised by the early-game tension
Best for
- Fans of narrative-heavy RPGs like Disco Elysium
- Players who enjoy sci-fi settings and strong world-building
- Those looking for a shorter, atmospheric indie experience
Avoid if
- You prefer deep, complex mechanical gameplay over reading
- You dislike RNG-dependent mechanics
- You are looking for a long, expansive RPG with high replayability

I had that discussion a while ago somewhere on reddit as well, in a review of Citizen Sleeper I believe.
I really adored the games vibe and themes, it felt like such a fascinating experience having this station go from a place that felt alien and scary and oppressive, to somewhere that felt like home. ... I think the efficiency at which this game was able to make me truly feel this world was beyond incredible
Also the illustrations are beautiful. I agree the urgency is resolved too early which makes second half less fun, but I don't mind the lack of consequences because I can appreciate the story and themes a bit more
Citizen Sleeper 1 is one of my favorite games.
I enjoyed the atmosphere greatly, but the choices...for an interactive fiction reader and writer like myself, they just weren't frequent or meaningful enough, and it made the dialogue sections feel like a bore. ... As for the gameplay, it kinda suffers from an inverted difficulty curve. You start out in a tough situation, and you feel the pressure your character is under, but then you get lots of resources and the sense of urgency disappears.
Currently playing through it now... Enjoying it so far.
My overall reception of the narrative was very positive, I havent encountered one this good since Disco Elysium (and that's the highest praise there can be). ... Despite the above, I still had a great time playing Citizen Sleeper. In a vacuum, Id give it 8/10, but given it's very cheap even for and indie game, I'd say it's a must-buy for anyone who enjoys narrative games.
One underrated part of Citizen Sleeper is that it knows when to end ... Chef's kiss, masterpiece. ... The restrained scope helps the story as well. The station has a cast of, what, ten real characters? The stories I shared with those characters were special and intimate.
I didn't like the writing in this game, which is at the core of the experience. ... As for the game part (i.e. the rolls), after the first two hours or so that you learn the tricks or advance enough that you can infinitely sustain your decaying body it becomes a chore of going through the motions
I absolutely love this game. The writing is top notch and the branching paths make multiple playthrough really worthwhile.
