AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Chord Mojo 2 is a highly acclaimed portable DAC/amp praised for its analytical clarity, expansive soundstage, and its unique built-in lossless EQ. While it is considered a significant sonic upgrade over its predecessor and many entry-level competitors, it is frequently criticized for its unconventional user interface and the continued use of Micro-USB. Most users find the sound quality and DSP capabilities exceptional, though a few reports of technical glitches and the high price point relative to modern dongles remain points of contention.

Pros

  • Exceptional sound quality with high analytical clarity and timing resolution.
  • Powerful built-in lossless EQ/DSP that allows for effective bass adjustment.
  • Compact and portable form factor with robust build quality.
  • Significant soundstage improvement over entry-level desktop and portable units.
  • Pairs exceptionally well with a wide range of headphones, including high-impedance and planar magnetic models.

Cons

  • Polarizing UI/UX that some users find difficult to navigate.
  • Relies on an outdated Micro-USB port for certain connections.
  • High price point compared to newer competitors like the FiiO BTR17.
  • Isolated report of the device emitting dangerously loud white noise bursts.

Caveats

  • The control system (colored buttons) has a learning curve that may frustrate some users.
  • While the EQ is praised as lossless, some users still find the implementation limited compared to software-based solutions.
  • Value proposition is strongest when purchased used or at a discount.

Best for

  • Audiophiles seeking a high-end portable setup with physical EQ controls.
  • Users of resolving headphones like the Sennheiser HD 6XX or HiFiMAN Arya Organics.
  • Listeners who want a DAC/amp that is small enough for travel but powerful enough for desktop use.

Avoid if

  • You demand a modern USB-C only workflow.
  • You prefer a traditional screen-based interface for settings and volume.
  • You are looking for the best price-to-performance ratio in the budget category.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is based on 20 mentions with a median age of approximately 296 days; because the data is older, confidence is slightly lower regarding its standing against the most recent hardware releases.

My friend got his mojo 1 (dead) upgraded to a mojo 2 for £150.

That’s pretty much why I didn’t buy Chord Mojo 2. Mojo 1 never had this issue (at least when I had it). Newer mojo 2 has new firmware. You can send it to Chord to update Firmware. This will fix it,

The Chord Mojo 2 seems to be, but that would be a completely different price region and size as well.

the Mojo 2 is fricking amazing, I still miss it. ... The Mojo 2 gets you already very close to the Hugo TT2, which costs close to 5k (for me that small difference was worth it, but honestly you don't really NEED that - Mojo 2 is good enough for most things).

If you can stretch your budget to a used Chord Mojo 2, you'll got a superb device that could keep you going for years to come. It's smooth so perfect for headphones like the Amiron.

The Mojo does have EQ options. However, those options are much more limited and work more like presets. It was not the right solution for me. It's a great little unit, and if you just want a fire-and-forget "this headphone needs a bass shelf" solution, it's great for that sort of use case.

There are a few exceptions (I genuinely hear things with a Chord Mojo 2 that I've never heard before, even on tracks I've listened to hundreds or thousands of times), but they're few and far between and even those aren't particularly big.
