AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Celeste is a highly acclaimed precision platformer celebrated for its tight mechanics, beautiful pixel art, and emotive soundtrack. While the game is infamously difficult, it is frequently described as "forgiving" due to its frequent checkpoints and subtle mechanical assists that favor the player. Beyond the gameplay, users are deeply invested in its story, which focuses on mental health, determination, and the sense of accomplishment found in overcoming monumental challenges.

Pros

  • Incredible music and blissful, calming soundtrack
  • Beautiful pixel art and breathtaking use of color
  • Forgiving checkpoint system that mitigates frustration
  • Deep mechanics built from simple, accessible moves
  • Relatable and touching story focused on mental health

Cons

  • Extremely high difficulty, particularly in optional late-game levels (e.g., 7C, Farewell)
  • One-shot spike deaths can be frustrating during long sections
  • Some level mechanics (specifically chapters 3 and 8) are polarizing

Caveats

  • Requires a 'die-and-retry' mindset; players may die thousands of times before finishing
  • Some high-level 'Golden' challenges are noted to be less satisfying or consistent in quality than the main levels

Best for

  • Fans of precision platformers like Super Meat Boy or Hollow Knight
  • Players who enjoy 'chipping away' at difficult tasks in short sessions
  • Those who value a strong narrative connection in a skill-based game

Avoid if

  • You are easily discouraged by repetitive failure or high-precision requirements
  • You prefer games with a lower mechanical skill floor

The music and art style are amazing, and I loved finding hidden areas, one of which had >!a playable miniature version of the game, very cool.!< I liked levels where I had to analyze and puzzle to get to a solution on when and how to use my available moves. The story's focus on mental health and determination was nice and I think it actually helped keep me motivated to reach the top of the mountain.

While appreciating it, I barely got by in Celeste. ... I’d say Celeste was harder to me.

The only issues I has were the few long rooms >!in 7C and farewell!< that were very difficult and punishing, and the level mechanics of the chapters >!3 and 8!<.

One of the best platforming games and has something for everyone no matter their platforming skill. Simple mechanics with a loth a depth, each chapter is a unique experience, good and relatable story, great music. It is difficult but very forgiving due to the frequent checkpoints.

Celeste hooked me by bringing an entirely different vibe to the affair, with its encouraging tone and relaxing mood. The soundtrack was blissful and calming, almost reassuring me that I could make those tough jumps. ... The visuals are breathtaking, making excellent use of saturated colour palettes, distinctive pixel art, and a sprinkling of particle effects for good measure. With a touching story drawn directly from the developer's personal struggles, this is an incredible affair, top to bottom.

I found Celeste very difficult, but you could practice and learn the layouts and raise your skill level and the game rewards you by letting you progress. If you play well, you will progress.

My TLDR verdict is a solid "highly recommend!" even for people like me who don't really play the genre. ... Celeste is definetly worth your time and 5 bucks.

I’m currently replaying Celeste for the first time in three years, and despite loving it the first time, I’d forgotten the extent to how good the game actually is. Everything about it clicks with me, from the story and characters to the art and gameplay.

It doesn't instill the same passion in me as the most difficult and beautiful parts of Donkey Kong Country 2 or Celeste
