  • Marseille was my base for my southern France trip and Cassis was my favorite part. The town is gorgeous and Les Calanques are beautiful, with beaches all over.
  • enjoy dinner along the harbour and then the next day so a Calanques boat tour.
  • Cassis and the Calanques are lovely.
  • Lourmarin is really pretty. Gordes and L’isle sur la Sourge are close by and also great. Cassis is gorgeous for a day and only 45 minutes from Aix.

Cons

  • Cassis is stunning but smaller — if you want a beach base with access to the Calanques, it's lovely, but you'll have fewer restaurant/dinner options.

If you can swing it, you could also stop in Cassis, which is nearish Provence, to see the Calanques on the coast. You can hike there or get a boat ride to see the cliffs.
