Pros

  • I did a 3 way blind with GTS, RR15 and C18 and the Calumet beat out RR15 for 2nd. I was shocked.
  • I really liked it, top 5. Remember every palate and review is different.
  • Overall, this is a fantastic whiskey. Is it going to be my bottle of the year? Not for me. If you love old oak and tannin notes with underlying fruit sweetness, this could be for you.
  • (Comparable pours: HH18 at A-, Calumet 18 at B+, EH Taylor Single Barrel at B-.)
  • Overall: this is quite the glow-up from Calumet. The earlier 14-16 year offerings were suffering from an awkward development stage, but this 18 year is fully developed and shows off a rich oaky and leathery maturity. ... I give it a soli...

Cons

  • At the nose I was super excited, but it went downhill towards the finish
  • Every sentence made this less and less appealing given where my wheelhouse sits.
  • Was it good - yes. Was it worth the $400 ~ $500 it's been going for ? Not to me. At that price point the bottle has to do everything right and excel in all areas. I didn't find it doing that for me.
  • Parent context: Curious if you’ve tried the Calumet 18 and, if so, how it contrasts? Reply: I have tried it and if you can just hold on until Wednesday, you'll have your question answered!

Sample A / Calumet 18 (59% abv) --- 9 (T8ke) ... Calumet has the more classic, and exceptionally refined, palate. ... If you picked the Calumet 18 I wouldn’t argue at all, they’re very different and both exceptional.
