butterfly keyboard

Pros
- It was fine, fast even, for touch typers whose fingers weren’t covered in food. Takes a bit to adjust, but think the “defect” designation was mainly a PR move.
Cons
- it’s a butterfly keyboard on the worst laptop Apple ever released so I’m sorry there basically no fix…
- Yes, they are that bad. Apple does not sell the keyboard, you'd have to replace the whole chassis; don't have any experience with aftermarket keyboards, but genuine Apple will be expensive to fix and guaranteed to fail shortly thereafter.
- Yes, avoid that at all cost
- every time I see the two words people always say they're easily breakable and that they're really expensive to fix.
- Parent context: I actually liked it very much. The only downside was that after a year of 2 i had 2 keys wich worked badly Reply: Anybody I knew had butterfly keyboard suffered from failing keys after 1-2 years of use. Terribly engineered.

I used one from 2017 until 2024. It made me avoid typing long texts. I even preferred answering mails on my phone rather than using the Mac. The keys didn’t have enough travel and you couldn’t almost notice if you were pressing them. It felt like tipping an imaginary keyboard on a table.
It was very to type on, almost no key travel - they did it in the pursuit of thinness. It was terrible.
The “Butterfly Keyboard” fiasco was minor compared to the shitshow of Microsoft and Android.
