Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The MacBook Air M2 is widely praised as a high-value, portable powerhouse that excels in battery life and aesthetic design. While it is a significant upgrade over older Intel models and even the M1 for most users, opinions are occasionally mixed regarding the performance of the base model's storage and its suitability for high-end professional video work.

Pros

  • Exceptional battery life that remains a standout feature for users.
  • Highly portable, lightweight, and minimalistic design.
  • Silent operation due to its fanless design.
  • Strong performance for daily tasks, university work, and even complex CAD files.
  • Excellent value when found at price points between $750 and $800.

Cons

  • Base model (256GB) features slower SSD read/write speeds due to its single NAND chip configuration.
  • May struggle with heavy processing tasks like editing high-resolution raw video footage.
  • Some users report a learning curve or adjustment period with the trackpad.

Caveats

  • The Midnight finish is highly aesthetic but may be a fingerprint magnet for some.
  • While 16GB of RAM is recommended for longevity, the base model's storage speed is a known hardware compromise.
  • Prospective buyers should weigh the M2 against newer M4 models if long-term software support (beyond 3-5 years) is a primary concern.

Best for

  • University students needing a reliable, long-lasting laptop.
  • General productivity and light creative work like photo editing or light video work.
  • Users transitioning from Windows who prioritize build quality and portability.

Avoid if

  • You are a professional videographer working primarily with raw high-resolution footage.
  • You require a high-refresh-rate display (ProMotion), which is exclusive to the Pro models.
  • You need the fastest possible internal storage speeds in a base-level configuration.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence includes a significant number of mentions from 2025, though the median source age is approximately 292 days. Note that several mentions of 'M2' in the raw data referred to vehicles or other electronics and were filtered to focus on the laptop.

The 16gb+ models handle it just fine and the ones we're using are 16gb M2 Airs.

The MacBook Air M2 is currently going for $799. The virtualization under Apple Silicon is actually faster than Bootcamp, so I'm not sure where you read that it's actually slower.

I’d probably get the M2 air with 16GB of ram and 512GB of storage, 256GB can be ok for some stuff

I would get Macbook Aiir m2 with 256gb.. > all day battery life > light weight ( and the charger is light also) > best screen, best keyboard, best touchpad. > hard to break mac OS.

I'm coming from a Macbook Air M2, and while i love it (the battery life, the quality build, the screen, the touchpad), the 8gb of ram is starting to not be enough, and i'm hating macOS more and more each day i have to use it.

Used MacBook Air m2 or m3 w/ 16 gb ram. Storage you can add but you don’t need it. Office has native macOS apps and the rest are browser based.

Macbook, it's heavily limited in what it can do, you'll have to deal not only with the OS but also the poor performance of the SoC in general. It will do basic and simple tasks well but struggles imensively for any computational heavy workload, which FL studio + plugins is.

Absolute premium build. I love the design, the screen, and even the camera notch. The legendary battery life is a massive plus—even though I’ll mostly use it at home, the freedom of not being tethered to a wall outlet on the couch is amazing. It's silent and feather-light.
